The tutors that we act as agent for have many years experience of preparing students for examination with our revision courses.  Everyone learns in different ways, so we tailor revision to fit your individual needs – rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Why is revision and prep vital for success?

Success follows the right preparation. Exam preparation involves revision, but it is also about:
  • Avoiding stress
  • Gaining confidence
  • Selecting the right topics
  • Knowing what the examiner wants to see

Why you should take a Lisa’s A Star Tutors Revision Course

It’s easy to kid yourself that staring at a pile of books is effective revision. But it’s not – because:
  • You may not know where to start
  • You may not be aware of all the things you don’t know
  • You may not be sure what you have to know to do well in the exams
A revision course will help focus your mind, structure your revision and give you the opportunity to ask questions, try new approaches and refresh your knowledge at just the right time.
  • Revision courses will run during the Easter Holidays
After a revision course, you’ll:
  • Have better understanding of your subject
  • Know how to answer the questions
  • Be more confident in your abilities
  • Understand how to study effectively – now and in the future.

GCSE/SATs: Revision courses
Over the three days of each revision course you will take part in a range of activities, which will range from tutor-led activities to student-led work. The tutors continuously check that students are concentrating, have understood and are ready to move on. In general, most students are happy to revisit areas to reinforce their understanding – although if there are large differences in the level of understanding in a group then alternative activities can always be negotiated.

GCSE Biology revision
OUR GCSE BIOLOGY ADDITIONAL HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND AND IMPROVE YOUR DATA ANALYSIS AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS SO YOU CAN USE THEM IN YOUR GCSE BIOLOGY EXAM. IN THE EXAM YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO ANALYSE DIAGRAMS, GRAPHS AND PIECES OF TEXT. Most students who join a GCSE biology revision course want help with topics covered in year 11. For instance:
  • Cells: cell structures, functions, cell types, transport into and out of cells, cell structures, enzymes, cell division, and bacteria structure.
  • Processes: for instance, photosynthesis, respiration, the effect of exercise on body systems and the immune response in health and disease
  • Tissues: digestive system structure, gas exchange in the lungs, blood tissue structure and function, leaf structure in plants, structure of joints, etc.
  • Organs and organ systems: heart and kidney structure and function, circulatory system, lung structure and digestive system structure.
  • Ecosystems: pyramids of number and biomass, energy flow, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, comparison of farming methods, population growth.
  • Biotechnology: yeast and bacterial cell growth, immobilised enzymes in industrial processes, genetic engineering and modification of plants.
  • Social issues: stem cells, cloning, selective breeding of pets and farm animals, behaviour and learning in humans and animals
Not all exam boards cover all these areas, so make sure you let your tutor know what you’d like them to cover before the date of the course. Over the three day course the focus will switch from tutor-led activities to student-led work. These activities may include:
  • Past papers – independently: students complete some papers. These are marked and feedback provided during the next session.
  • Past papers – with assistance: students work on past papers in small groups and with assistance from the course tutor.
  • Descriptive sessions: students study resources (graphs, data, etc) and then discuss and describe the topic in full – using the correct terms.
  • Teacher’s notes: the tutor presents topic notes in full, if students have never covered the basic topic. Students then read and discuss the notes.
  • Full teaching: the tutor teaches a topic, then generates discussion and questions students to gauge their knowledge of the subject.
The tutors continuously check that students are concentrating, have understood and are ready to move on. In general, most students are happy to revisit topics to reinforce their understanding – although if there are large differences in the level of understanding in a group then alternative activities can always be negotiated.
