Hi, my name is Tom and I have 7 years of experience tutoring and teaching Maths and Science KS2 – KS5, focusing mostly on KS3 – KS5 (A level specialisms are Maths and Physics). I have helped many students achieve their desired grades and often exceed them; by whittling down where exactly they need to improve their knowledge to ace an exam and by building a rapport and fostering an environment where learning can be fun, efficient and meaningful.
I have found that 1:1 or small group tuition is where my skills are best utilised, and where the most impact can be made to a person’s educational journey. Combined with my absolute passion for logic, mathematical thinking and the scientific method, this makes me an extremely qualified and dedicated tutor who has been able to get through to and assist students from all walks of life.
My recent experience as Maths Lead at an SEND school has benefited my understanding of special needs, learning difficulties and barriers to learning. My rapport building skills have improved significantly, which I have found to be absolutely essential in achieving consistent progress towards academic goals.
It is my belief that the number one reason many children and adults alike do not enjoy or pursue maths is that they see no direct link between what they are taught in school and the world around them. I have honed my ability to turn a boring maths lesson into a story; a journey through history to examine, for example, why algebra is useful in solving a whole host of real-world problems and how trigonometry has transformed our environment. What is the significance of using fractions and percentages? Why bother writing down calculations step-by-step? All valid, common questions that unfortunately are often not given a satisfactory answer.
